It’s time to take the wallet selection process seriously!
Read out tips (they’re painless and useful, we promise) and you’ll learn that there is much more to choosing a wallet than the price tag and the color.
Where to Start
Use your current wallet for reference as you search for a new one and ask yourself what you like and don’t like about it.
- Is it too small or too big?
- Are the materials wearing down or is the stitching coming loose?
- Do you wear it in your front pocket or back pocket, and do you want to switch pocket locations?
- Do you prefer leather or would you prefer something made of utility fabric?

What to Know as You Search
Here are some useful tips and features to keep an eye out for as you search.
- RFID Blocking. In order to protect your credit cards and your passport from skimmers, get yourself an RFID (radio frequency identification) blocking wallet.
- Size. Money clip, billfold, tri-fold wallet, travel wallet? There are plenty of sizes available and something out there for everyone.
If you travel internationally often, then we suggest you find something that will fit your passport.
If you prefer to wear your wallet in the front pocket of your jeans or the inside pocket of a jacket, then a money clip or a billfold wallet are nice.
If you carry a lot of cards, then a tri-fold wallet will offer you all of the storage space you need.
If You Want Leather…
Leather is common, but do you know the difference between each quality?
- Genuine Leather. This is the real thing, but it’s the lowest in quality of the three.
- Top-Grain Leather. This is a decent quality leather. Keep in mind that it has most likely been sanded or worked over in order to remove any imperfections or flaws, which does impact the longevity.
- Full-Grain Leather. This is the finest quality of leather there is.
Another thing to look at when you’re hunting for a quality leather wallet is the construction. The little things make a huge difference in the wallet’s lifespan.
- Corners. Make sure that the corners of the wallet are pleated rather than cut and folded.
- Stitching. If the stitching doesn’t line up evenly or it gets a little crooked along the edges, put it back.
Lines should be straight and even. This shows you that the time was dedicated by the craftsman to ensure the quality of the finished product.
- Edge. You may notice that some wallets have a turned edge while others have a cut edge.
The turned edge is where they’ve folded the end of the leather under itself and then stitched over it to keep it in place. This give you smooth, clean lines and a more professional look.
A cut edge is where they leave the raw edge of leather out and then stitch over it. This gives the wallet a more rustic, natural feel.
- Avoid Burnished Edges. Sometimes they won’t even turn the edge or leave the raw edge visible. Instead, they cover it with a resin material.
While this may give it a clean, finished look, it is absolute rubbish in terms of quality.
(the edge will appear to have a plastic-like material on it, like this)
If you see a leather wallet with burnished edges, don’t buy it! The material will eventually fall off.
Top 5 Best Wallets for Men Reviews
Those of you looking for a leather wallet with a money clip inside will love this one from Amelleon.
This is a bi-fold with six card slots and a clear ID window on the outside. This is nice so you don’t have to open up your wallet every time you need to show someone your ID and, subsequently, show them the entire contents of your wallet.
What’s our favorite part about this wallet? The fact that it is made of full-grain leather and it is affordable.
It’s slim, durable and well-constructed: everything that a good wallet should be! The best wallet for men who want something made of the highest quality of leather.
If you’re looking for something similar to the previous wallet but in a slightly different style, then may we suggest this full-grain leather wallet from Serman.
It comes in four different colors, you have the RFID protection just like the Amelleon (but it blocks up to 13.56 MHz or higher RDIF signals).
This will hold five cards (the previous one held six) and the clear ID window is located inside the wallet (so you’ll need to open it to show someone).
Another great option for those of you in search of a minimalist wallet made in full-grain leather.
Fossil’s wallet here says made of 100% leather, which, to us, means genuine leather (the lowest quality). That doesn’t necessarily mean that the wallet is low quality, however!
This is great for those of you who carry a lot of cards around. It’s a tri-fold and well-constructed (we checked for the pleated corners and this does have them). The stitching is even and you can choose from black or brown leather.
Expect this to be a bit bulkier than other options on our list. That’s to be expected, though, when you carry around quite a few items (or a thick wad of cash) on a regular basis!
Sorry, no RFID protection on this one.
This is a very non-traditional wallet that seems to have caught on in recent years.
It’s made of polycarbonate (the same stuff used to make hard shell luggage) and aircraft grade aluminum, making it virtually indestructible throughout the years.
It offers you a high level of RFID protection, holds up to 8 cards and 10 cash bills, and you can choose from eight different colors.
Considering the materials used to make it (aluminum), it does have a higher price. This is perfect for you outdoorsy gentleman/dudes.
Makes a great birthday or Father’s Day gift!
If you’re a traveler and you want to avoid being pick-pocketed, this is the best men’s wallet on our list.
This hangs securely around your neck, so in the even that someone goes fishing in your back pockets, they’ll at least remove a little of the built-up lint from the corners.
This features the ever-useful RFID blocking technology, it has zippered pouches to ensure that the contents of your wallet stay where you put them, and it has room for everything you need: phone, passport, money, receipts, hotel key, etc.
We wouldn’t recommend something like this as an everyday wallet, but if you or the person you are shopping for travels frequently for leisure, this is one to consider.
